I see this all the time in my practice - and I've lived it myself. When we're in the thick of emotional energy, everything feels bigger, heavier, more overwhelming. It's like trying to see clearly through foggy glass.
But here's what I've come to understand about emotions: they're simply energy in motion. That's not just a nice play on words - it's the key to working with them instead of being overwhelmed by them.
Think about it. Energy needs to move. When we try to suppress it, push it down, or override it, it doesn't actually go away. It just gets stored in our system, waiting for the right moment (and often the wrong time) to be released.
The beautiful thing is, we don't have to process everything in the heat of the moment. In fact, some of the most powerful healing happens when we create space to revisit emotions from a place of calm and safety.
It's like listening to loud music when you're already overstimulated...it's going to add to your stress and anxiety. When we're not in the midst of feeling "emotional," we can actually see what's there. We can notice patterns. We can understand what these emotions are trying to tell us.
Something I've discovered on my own journey - and what I witness with my clients - is that we can have our emotions without letting them have us. You're not your anger, your fear, or your grief. You're the sacred witness to these energies moving through you.
And here's another truth that's transformed my understanding: these emotions we feel? They're ours to tend to. When we find ourselves pointing fingers or getting caught in stories about why someone else "made us feel" a certain way, it's an invitation to turn inward. To ask ourselves what these emotions are really showing us about our own needs and boundaries.
